So you’ve run a couple of Chocobo races in the Manderville Gold Saucer, and now your Chocobo is too high rank. What do you then? Cover them, of course. And by that we don’t mean with a blanket or cloth. Part of the Chocobo racing system is Covering. Through it old and new Final Fantasy XIV account holders can get new Chocobos to race with.

What FFXIV Account holders need to prepare

Chocobos at or above rank 40 can be retired. Doing so allows them to be used for Covering which is a fancy term for breeding Chocobos. The fledgling Chocobos produced can then be raised and raced by Final Fantasy 14 account holders. Before players can arrange Coverings however, they will first need to finish the Like Sire Like Fledgling quest. This is available to level 15 characters and is taken from the Chocobokeep NPC in the Chocobo Square (x6, y4).

In order to proceed with Covering, players will need at least one retired Chocobo at rank 40 or higher. Ideally the player will have two retired Chocobos to cover, but in case you only have one, a breeding Chocobo can be hired. Additionally, note that when retiring your race Chocobo for Covering, you can pick an ability it has to be hereditary by praising it.

Setting up the covering FFXIV Account

Covering can be arranged by speaking to Katering at Moogle’s Gift Mounts in North Shroud (x20, y22). FFXIV account holders will then need to pick a male and female Chocobo. Players will be able to see the stats of the picked Chocobos as well as the abilities the fledgling might inherit. Note that only one of the two Chocobos can be a hired breeding Chocobo. Having two retried Chocobos is preferred however.

Getting the fledgling on your FFXIV Account

When you are satisfied with the match, click Commence to finalize the Covering. You will also need to pay a fee, in Gil, for the Covering. Once the payment has been received, the Chocobos will be taken by Katering and you will be given a Proof of Covering item. Note that it takes time before the fledgling is born and is ready to be raised. The item you get will specify when you can pick up your fledgling from Katering. Simply return after the indicated date and time on the certificate and you’ll have your fledgling.
